Public Sector Training Package

The Public Sector Training Package is a collection of nationally agreed skills, or competency standards, required to carry out public service work effectively. The competency standards are packaged into nationally recognised qualifications which range from entry-level to senior management.  Government Skills Australia is the organisation responsible for updating and maintaining the Public Sector Training Package, to ensure that it continues to meet the changing needs of the Australian Public Service (APS).  The Commission promotes the Training Package as an important training and development option for APS agencies.

You can find out more about the Public Sector Training Package including information on Registered Training Organisations (RTO) that offer the package in your area at:

The Australian Public Service Commission is becoming a RTO

The Australian Public Service Commission is preparing to become a registered training organisation.  The Commission currently offers many quality non-accredited learning programmes that are related to competencies in the Public Sector Training Package.  Once the Commission is a RTO participants who attend training programmes will have the opportunity to apply their learning to the workplace and receive recognition for competencies from the Public Sector Training Package.  Participants will have the option to apply for a statement of attainment or an entire qualification.  The Commission has established the following timeline for the implementation of its RTO status and services.

Government Skills Australia

Government Skills Australia (GSA) was formed on 1 July 2005 and is the new vocational education and training industry body for the Australian Public Service and the wider public sector industry. Amongst other responsibilities, it maintains and promotes the Public Sector Training Package and the Public Safety Training Package.  GSA hosts the Public Sector Industry Advisory Committee which is responsible for ensuring that the Public Sector Training Package is up to date and relevant to the current public sector environment.  The Commission occupies a place on the Industry Advisory Committee and plays a role in providing input into the future directions of the package.
