Learning and development for Executive Levels

The Commission knows and understands the needs, culture, future challenges and Government expectations of the APS like no other provider.

Our Executive learning and development programmes are APS-focused; delivering the core skills, behaviours and knowledge to help you establish a strong foundation in the public sector.

The Commission is distinguished from other training providers in that we work collaboratively with APS agencies and professional facilitators to deliver tailored and targeted whole-of-government programmes that respond to the increasing complexity of contemporary APS work. As a flexible and forward looking organisation the Commission is able to quickly react to changes in government priorities by designing, developing and introducing new, highly relevant and innovative learning and development solutions.

A comprehensive list and detailed information of all our national programmes and events is available at www.apsc.gov.au/learn/programmes.htm or select one of the programme streams below. As other programmes and events are developed details will be available from this website.

Special event:

Ethics Hypothetical

At the top of the Government’s agenda for the Australian Public Service is reinvigorating the Westminster tradition of an independent public service and building a professionalised public service committed to excellence. Central to the achievement of both is a commitment to an ethical APS.

These and many more complex and engaging issues will be considered during the Ethics Hypothetical. This exciting event will be facilitated by leading educator, communications consultant, broadcaster and author, Mr Peter Thompson. He will be posing challenging ethical issues to a panel of senior public servants, politicians, academics and third sector officials.

Focus on People: Foundations for APS leaders

The Australian Public Service Commission is hosting an exciting new series which focuses on contemporary Australian Public Service (APS) wide challenges and people issues for leaders in the APS. The series is designed to provide staff at the APS 6 – EL1 level with an opportunity to hear from experts on a range of topics that will assist them in their work and career. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues whilst networking with their APS colleagues.

Residential programmes
Residential programmes provide a unique opportunity to focus on core capabilities and behaviours and to interact with peers and network with colleagues across the APS, building networks and cultivating productive working relationships.

Australian and New Zealand School of Government
ANZSOG provides teaching programmes for current and emerging public sector leaders to enhance the breadth and depth of policy, leadership and management skills needed in today’s public sector.

Global Leadership Practices Programme
The GLP is a ground breaking programme designed for high potential APS Executive Level officers. The programme is presented by Yellow Edge and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong in Shanghai and is supported by the Australian Public Service Commission.

Human Resources Management Development
The SES and EL levels within the Australian Public Service have important human resource responsibilities. Effective People Management and Human Resource Strategy are intrinsically linked to organisational performance. The HR Management Development programme focuses on building capacity in these critical areas through a series of workshops that can either stand alone or be taken as an integrated whole.

Public Sector Management Programme (PSM)
With a focus on the strategic direction for the public sector, this programme presents an integrated view of business planning, public accountability and the ability to lead.

Indigenous programmes
The Commission is working towards improving the number of Indigenous Australians working in the APS and their prospects for career development. The Commission offers a range of development programmes for Indigenous employees in the APS.

Integrated Leadership System (ILS)
The ILS defines the capabilities required of employees in the APS. The suite of development programmes, events and services provided by the Commission have been specifically designed to reflect this Framework and enhance the performance of the APS.

Executive Level Leadership Network (formerly known as the LDN)
The Executive Level Leadership Network series provides opportunities for information sharing and developing strong communities of interest supporting strategic and operational leadership issues and initiatives across the Australian Public Service.

The Commission has established a panel of more than one hundred leading corporate management consultancy firms with public and private sector expertise. The Commission can customise programmes and services to meet the particular needs of agencies in a flexible and cost effective manner.
