What is Connected Government?
The phrase “Connected Government” was coined during the process of building this website. It is derived from the title of the Management Advisory Committee (MAC) report Connecting Government: Whole of Government Responses to Australia’s Priority Challenges. Changing “connecting” to “connected” is meant to imply a sense of achievement, not that the process of connecting government will ever be complete. The phrase “connected government” is not meant to replace “whole of government”; it is merely the name for this website.
“Whole of government” is the preferred phrase for referring to coordinated activities of government that cross jurisdictions. Other phrases in circulation include “integrated government”; “joined-up government”; “coordinated government”; and “one-stop-shop”.
The MAC report Connecting Government: Whole of Government Responses to Australia’s Priority Challenges defines “whole of government” as follows:
Whole of government denotes public service agencies working across portfolio boundaries to achieve a shared goal and an integrated government response to particular issues. Approaches can be formal and informal. They can focus on policy development, program management and service delivery.
