The Commission’s international assistance programme during 2005–06 included a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

During the year the Commission supported the organisation of two Pacific Regional Public Service Commissioners’ conferences: in Nadi, Fiji, 27–29 July 2005, and in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 19–21 June 2006. These regional meetings are designed to develop strong and continuing links between Public Service Commissioners in the region and provide a forum for the exchange of public sector reform information and experience.

The conference in Fiji focused on leadership and performance management in the public sector. The conference was provided with an update on Australia’s engagement with the Pacific on public service matters. Australia was represented at the conference by the Commissioner.

The conference in Papua New Guinea provided the opportunity for public service agency representatives from across the region to discuss the conference theme of ‘an affordable and sustainable public service delivering effective and efficient services’. Australia was represented at the conference by Jeff Lamond (Acting Deputy Public Service Commissioner at the time).

The delegates also re-confirmed their mission statement:

To enhance, through networking and cooperation, the development of public administration in the Pacific region geared towards improving service delivery, transparency, integrity and accountability.
